Enough of mainstream art for now, seeking something fresh I managed to get a sneak preview of Show OFF 09 at WL Fine Arts off Jalan Gasing, across from Rajoo's which opens today and goes on 'til 1st May. Artists, Sageena Satheesan, Julaiha Nazreen and Anita Nasir (Anita moolights as a lecturer @ Lim Kok Wing) were there preparing for their debut and were down to earth and kind enough give me a walk/talk-through.
A platform for brand new talent to erm... Show Off, the show celebrates 12 newcomers, an ecclectic bunch of people exploring all different mediums from watercolor to glass. The artists, namely; Mohamed Razif, D. Thanaselvam, Anita Nasir, Edwin Lee, Mark Harris, Lisa Zainuddin, Sageena Satheesan, Julaiha Nazreen, Ridwana, Alan Lam Tain Zoe and husband and wife team Yin Yang save for Mohamed Razif (who's a hardcore artist) have day-jobs mostly in the creative industries yet found the time to pull this off. -Now, that's what I call love!
No frills or fancy themes, just art from the heart. With fewer misses than one would expect from such an experimental show, it has something for everyone -edgy, reflective or just plain fun. I also appreciated that the work is nicely hung and easy to navigate, -meaning: if I was left alone I could get happily lost in there for at least an hour! These really are great first time efforts showing real future promise. Priced between RM300-RM3000 you can't really go wrong anyway. A few have already sold and even I couldn't help myself from picking up a piece or two but I'm not saying what.
This is the first show to be sponsored by WL Fine Arts (better known for their great framing) who up 'til now specializes only in KL's hush-hush but burgeoning secondary art market -and that's a whole 'nother post! doing their bit for emerging talent. -Kudos!

wonderful wonderful fun! finally no more fake-upmarket shows that offer wine and cheese, just raw talent. this is what we all really need. this is one show i believe i can walk into with shorts, have orange juice, sit on the floor and enjoy good art. maybe sit on the floor with the artist and have a chat. like the good old days in college. someday, i too can go there to draw and exhibit my pieces. finally! there's hope for me....sarina mansor
sungguh tak diduga, semua pelukis di sana termasuk pemilik galeri tersebut menerima kehadiran saya dengan baik sekali. sungguhpun pelukis disitu tidaklah ternama tetapi saya mampu dan teringin sekali beli karya karya mereka. simple,cantek dan langsung tidak mahal. galeri lain pamerkan bahan seni ternama tetapi tidak menerima tamu dengan ikhlas. di sini saya memahami mesej di sebalik lukisan dengan bercakap dengan artis sendiri. saya gembira di situ.harap harap lebih banyak show sebegini
I think its a great way to introduce new budding artist to the public. With more support from companies like WL Fine Arts, our local artists have a good chance to get into the market and even get international recognition. Way to go! Can't wait for Show Off '09. and Good Luck to all our artists!

nice framing styles. good explanations. not the best of paintings but good start from the artists.cheap. good food.but if you go to their other galleries opposite the road, i think you will be blown away. they have so many art pieces that will put any gallery in town to shame. yet they are nice to people. you know what...i found a latiff mohideen on the floor. Later I found another ib; original hidden behind another art. I asked the owners why there, he said...here, everyone's equal. I almost cried. best of all about the show, it's art from the heart like the owner said.
